The UMBC Department of Visual Arts recognizes ongoing conceptual and technical changes in art and design, and incorporates those changes into the curricula. In addition to studying foundational techniques, art history, and critical theory, students are encouraged to explore related arts disciplines to inform their own art practices.

The MFA in Imaging and Digital Arts recognizes the conceptual and technical transformation now occurring in the visual arts. The program is committed to investigating these transformations within the broader context of the history of art. This exploration of emerging technologies gives rise to new processes that pose new conceptual challenges. Answering these challenges is central to the student’s course of study.

The MFA IMDA Program strives to provide graduate students with a laboratory environment equipped with relevant and engaging media tools to empower them to generate evolutionary artistic solutions. IMDA students have access to updated facilities and methodologies for making art and to courses in art history and theory that reflect current critical discourse.

The IMDA course of study offers students an interdisciplinary approach to new methods of image making that enables them to develop technical skills and intellectual flexibility by incorporating:

* Computer art
* Video
* Cinematic Arts
* Photography
* Installation
* Interactive and hybrid forms of display
* Art theory and criticism

IMDA students work toward gaining greater technical proficiency and conceptual understanding of several media and equip themselves to dissolve the limits of any one specialized field or method. The MFA in Imaging and Digital Arts is committed to investigating conceptual and technical transformations in the visual arts within the broader context of the history of art. Such exploration and experimentation pose new conceptual challenges that are central to the student's course of study.

The M.F.A. IMDA Program, a full-time, three-year course of study, is open to a limited number of applicants so lab facilities will be available to them.

IMDA Grad & 2011 Baker Artist Award winner Gary Kachadourian @ BMA

Baker Artist Awards 2011
September 7 – October 2, 2011
Free exhibition

The BMA celebrates the Baker Artist Awards with an exhibition of works by the three Mary Sawyers Baker Prize winners: visual artist Gary Kachadourian, performance artist Audrey Chen, and beatboxer and vocal percussionist Shodekeh. Recipients of 18 $1,000 b-grants will also have the opportunity to exhibit their works at the BMA. The exhibition will culminate in a free late night closing party on Saturday, October 1.

This year, 696 Baltimore-area artists submitted their work to the competition at www.bakerartistawards.org. The three winners of the $25,000 Mary Sawyers Baker Prizes were selected by a private jury of national experts.

The William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund established the Baker Artist Awards in 2008-2009 and the b-grants in 2010-2011 to recognize Baltimore’s artists and engage regional, national, and international audiences in supporting these artists’ work. All Baltimore-area artists working in any creative discipline are encouraged to register, exhibit their work, promote the site to friends, and compete for the Mary Sawyers Baker Prizes.
